NEWGEN KWINANA POWER STATION

When completed the NewGen Kwinana Power Station will be Western Australia's most modern and efficient baseload power station. The $400 million, 320MW plant is due to be completed in 2008 and will provide electricity into the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS), Western Australia's main electricity grid.   The power station is being constructed in Kwinana, approximately 30 kilometres south of Perth.

In 2005, Wambo Power Ventures, the sponsors of NewGen Kwinana Power Station, won a competitive tender process undertaken by the State-owned electricity utility, Western Power Corporation (WPC). The tender was for a long term electricity sale agreement to provide a baseload power station to supply electricity for the south-west of the State through the SWIS.   Since that time the electricity market in Western Australia has been restructured and WPC has been disaggregated.   The power from NewGen Kwinana Power Station will be sold to WPC's electricity retail successor entity, Synergy. The combined cycle gas-fired baseload power station will provide low cost, environmentally friendly electricity to Western Australia utilising gas from the North-West Shelf delivered through the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
